In simple terms dieting is basically controlling the amount of food you eat for the purpose of managing your weight. A good diet is one where you eat less, limit the junk food you eat, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and exercise in some manner. See how simple it is.
If you can follow these simple principles you will be ahead of the game in helping to prevent some of the major diseases like coronary heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis and some others. Oh yeah, you may also lose weight, feel better and look better.
Eating less involves taking in fewer calories. This means not overeating or eating fatty foods or high sugar foods. Also, avoiding snacks between meals and eating smaller portions goes a long way in helping you manage your weight. This is easier said than done. However this is the basic principle behind dieting.

Conventional diets are very difficult to provide long term weight loss. The reason is because when you begin to reduce your calorie intake you begin to slow your metabolism. When you go on a diet you reduce your calorie intake which results in your body thinking it is being starved. Your body is conditioned to slow down your metabolism when it thinks no food is coming in and starts to store all the food you eat as fat.
So although you are eating less food your body doesn’t know what you are trying to do. It starts metabolizing the food more slowly and stores more fat. The key to fast weight loss is speeding up your metabolism. Metabolism is the rate at which your body utilizes food for energy, cellular growth and maintenance.
So do diets work for everyone? Everybody is different. Everyone has a different body chemistry and metabolism. What works for one person may not work for another. You probably know friends or family members who can eat whatever they want and don’t need to diet to stay fit. Everyone needs different types and quantities of proteins, carbohydrates and fats to cause accelerated metabolism to help them lose weight.
So if diets do work which diet should you choose? There are many diets for you to choose from. The popular ones like Atkins, South Beach Diet and The Zone Diet are just a few of the more popular ones. They work for some people and don’t for others. There are calorie restricted diets, fasting and detox diets, low carb diets, low fat diets and vegetarian diets. The key is to find the diet that fits your body chemistry and speeds up your metabolism.
You can find the diet that’s best for you but if you don’t combine it with some type of exercise you will find yourself on a weight loss roller coaster. How much you weigh is a balance between the calories you take in and the ones you use up. Being active uses more calories and strengthens your muscles and regulates your metabolism. As teens or young adults most of us were very active. Once we hit adulthood we became to busy to be active. Instead of exercising we began to sit more i.e., at our desk, in the car or on the couch. Simply going back to being more active will reverse some of the weight problems we encounter.
Do diets work when properly balanced with exercise? The answer is yes.
Eating more fruits and vegetables and less junk foods is beneficial no matter what diet you end up following. It doesn’t mean that you can’t have junk food but what kind and how much will be the key to your weight management. You also will be required to understand the right fruits to eat and how much. Remember, fruits have natural sugars and need to be managed as well. Do diets work when you cut down on junk foods and replace them with more fruits and vegetables? Absolutely!
Do diets work? Yes and no! Let’s pretend I have a Mercedes Benz and you have a Honda. We both have cars that run but on different fuel. My car needs diesel and your car can run on regular. It’s the same with our bodies. What my body needs for fuel to burn effectively is slightly different than your body. The key is to find the right balance for your body. Diets do work if you find the right one for you.
